# Connect ChatGPT

**What this is:** add Bill & Ben to ChatGPT on the web.
**Who it is for:** ChatGPT users whose workspace lets them add a custom connection.

## Who can use it
OpenAI now calls these connections **Plugins** (earlier: apps or connectors). Adding your own server is done on the web only, not in the phone app.

- **ChatGPT Business:** only admins and owners can add and publish a custom server. Members then use it once it is published.
- **ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu:** admins and owners publish. An admin can give other people the role permission "Create plugins with MCPs".
- **Plus, Pro, Free, Go:** OpenAI's developer pages do not say. Reports say Pro may only read. If you do not see the option, your plan or workspace does not allow it. Ask your admin or use [Claude](claude.md) or the [other apps](other-apps.md).

Bill & Ben changes things, so ChatGPT asks you to confirm before each action that is not read-only.

## What an admin must do
- Check that your workspace allows custom plugins. If ChatGPT shows a blocked message, the admin changes this in the workspace settings.
- Make sure the people who will connect have the Bill & Ben permission `gateway.connect` (see [permissions](../platform/permissions.md)).
- ChatGPT cannot use a fixed key or header. It can only sign in with OAuth, so a personal access token does **not** work in ChatGPT.

## Steps
1. Go to `chatgpt.com/plugins` and sign in.
2. Choose the plus button, then **Add custom MCP server**.
3. Enter a name (for example Bill & Ben), a short description and the server address `https://ai.<brand>/mcp`.
4. For authentication choose **OAuth**. If ChatGPT offers a choice of how it registers, choose the automatic option.
5. Read the warning, choose **I understand and want to continue**, then **Create as a plugin**.
6. Install the plugin when asked. A sign-in page from Bill & Ben opens. Sign in with your company account and choose **Allow**.
7. In a new chat, type `@` and pick the plugin, then ask: "What can you do with Bill & Ben?"

If your workspace uses the older path, an admin can instead go to Workspace settings, then Apps, then **Create**. We could not confirm those menu names on a page we could read.

## What you can do
All the tools on the [overview](../connect-your-ai.md#what-you-can-do-once-connected). Open the plugin's details page to switch single tools on or off, and use **Refresh** after we add tools. Tools that only read show no prompt. Tools that start work or cancel it ask you to confirm.

## If it goes wrong

| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Error creating connector" | ChatGPT could not reach or set up the server. Check the address ends in `/mcp` and try again. Tell your admin if it repeats. This text comes from a community report, not OpenAI's docs. |
| Sign-in page says **Not on your organisation's list** | Your admin must add you. Then connect again. |
| `invalid_client` | The saved registration is out of date. Delete the plugin and add it again. |
| Plugin asks you to sign in again after some days | Normal. Sign in again from the plugin page. |
| Tools missing | Open the plugin's details and choose Refresh. |
| "your organisation has not given you gateway access" | Ask your admin for `gateway.connect`. |

For limit and budget messages see [common problems](../connect-your-ai.md#common-problems).

## Disconnect
1. Open Settings, then Apps (or Plugins).
2. Open Bill & Ben and disconnect your account. Removing the plugin entirely may need an admin.
3. Admins on Business, Enterprise and Edu can remove the plugin for everyone from the admin console.

OpenAI does not say whether this also ends the token on our side. Tokens last one hour and renewals last 30 days. To cut access at once, ask your admin to remove your `gateway.connect` permission.
